I have confirmed that U-ta-wa-un is not the same person as Layton Kanistanaux, but what about Marleah, who was traveling with U-ta-wa-un in 1870? Is she Marleah Kanistanaux?
The jury is still out on this question. Today I will outline what I have discovered to date and how I interpret the material. I encourage my readers to comment.
Welcome to the Research Journal of Ne-Do-Ba. I will be exploring a number of potential Wabanaki (Native American) families found in Northeastern North America. I would like to share my journey with others. - - - - - Wlipunkini - Travel Well

Who Is “U-Ta-Wa-Un”?
I spent a day searching on the name “U-ta-wa-un” to see what I could turn up. I Googled him and I tried a number of newspaper search engines. I found a surprising amount of information about him. But is he the same person as Layton Kanistanaux?

Is This Marleah in 1870?
I have been searching for Layton & Marleah in census records prior to the 1875 NY State Census. I had no luck searching on the family name Kanistanaux. I decided to try just “Marleah” in an 1870 census search. I was surprised and very pleased to find a possible candidate.
